How to Insert an Image Inline in Gmail

 

With Microsoft Outlook 2007, one can copy and paste screenshot taken by Snipping Tools into the email body. Instead of appearing as image attachments to recipients, the images are shown inline with text in the email body. In Gmail, there is no such feature by default, to insert images inline in email body. You can, however, enable a Gmail Labs feature called “Inserting Images” to enjoy this function.

As you can see from the screenshot, sender can easily refer to the image by explicitly position the image in question right inside the email body, rather than asking recipients to refer one of the attachments. It is more convenient to read email with images appearing inline as compare to open attachments one by one and flipping between email message and attachment views, isn’t it?
How to paste image in Gmail message body?
1) Log in to Gmail and access to Gmail Labs
2) Locate and enable the “Inserting Images” plugin appears in the Gmail Labs listing
Now, go to compose an email in Gmail, you should notice a new shortcut icon (as highlighted by irregular circle in the screenshot). Click the “insert image” icon to select the right image with pop-up dialog box and click OK button to insert / paste image into the email body.
To turn on Gmail's Insert Image button :

1. Follow the Settings link in Gmail.
2. Go to the Labs tab.
3. Make sure Enable is selected for Inserting images.
4. Click Save Changes. 

To insert an image found on the web fast in any Gmail message:

• Make sure the image is located at a web server.
• That means you can open the image in your browser and have an address line that starts with "http".
• You can upload the image to your web host or use a graphic you found on the web (which you can use without violating any terms).
• If you don't have a web site, turn to a free image hosting service instead.
• If the image is larger than some 640x640 pixels, consider shrinking it to more handy proportions before you put it online.
• Locate the image on the web site or open it directly in your browser.
• If the image appears on a page together with other items:
• Click on the image with the right mouse button.
• Select View Image from the menu.
• Hit Ctrl-A (Windows, Linux) or Command-A to highlight the image.
• Hit Ctrl-C (Windows, Linux) or Command-C.
• Make sure rich text editing is turned on in the Gmail message you are composing.
• If you can see a Rich formatting » link above the editing area, click it.
• Position the cursor in the Gmail message where you want the image to appear.

 

12 Tips For Buying A Laptop

If you are thinking of going in for a laptop (or a notebook, as it is called among the tech circles), here are a few tips that will come in handy.

1. Opt for an Intel Pentium 4 or an Intel Centrino processor. The processor forms the computing core of your laptop and is one area where you must not compromise.
Invest wisely here. The processor is the first component likely to get outdated and it is not possible to upgrade it.

2. Opt for a 256 MB DDR SDRAM. A RAM of lower memory capacity will make it difficult to run certain applications and software.
Upgrading from 256 to 512 MB DDR SDRAM could cost you between Rs 4,000 and Rs 5,000.

3. Choose an Active-matrix (TFT) display, preferably an LCD. The display is an active matrix if you can see the arrow while it traverses the screen. Most displays nowadays are TFTs as the Passive-matrix (dual scan) is now outdated.
TFTs are highly preferred because of their sharper images, better resolution and smoother images of motion on the screen.
Wide screen laptops are a visual treat and recommended for those interested in the movie experience. But they cost 8% to 10% more than the conventional laptops, are obviously bulkier to carry and slightly low on battery life.

4. If you travel extensively, take care that your laptop weighs under 5 pounds. If your laptop will be confined to your room, you could go in for a slightly heavier one. It will be cheaper. It will also have a few more features.

5. Check the battery life on the laptop. Insist that it is a Lithium-ion (Li+) battery (nearly all laptops will have this one). Choose batteries with a high voltage and a high mAh. Do not go for NiMH batteries, as you will have to keep charging them frequently.

6. If you have no intention of using a CD frequently, an external DVD and CDRW drives may be preferred to inbuilt ones. The main convenience being that they reduce the weight of the base piece and provide lesser complications later on.
If they are an integral part of your work, you might as well opt for an inbuilt version.
Incidentally, the prices of DVD drives are expected to fall considerably over the next one year.
Don't stress on your laptop having a floppy drive. Floppies are getting obsolete by the minute and will soon be terminated.

7. If you are on the move, buy a laptop with a spill-resistant keyboard and shock-resistant hard drives. This will ensure your hard disk does not crash and you don't lose data in the event of a minor crash or fall.

8. Ensure the laptop has two or more USB ports, as you will need them to attach your peripheral devices like printers and scanners.
You could even consider buying a pen drive to act as a reliable data transfer mode.
Choose a laptop with wireless connectivity in the form of Bluetooth and Infrared. These make data transfer very convenient and reliable and you can send data to multiple recipients at one go.
These facilities on your laptop would cost you around Rs 1,000 more and are independent of any service providers.

9. Windows XP Professional is an ideal system for a laptop meant for office use. In laptops, it is very inconvenient to upgrade your operating system, so choose the latest one.
Windows is the most popular operating system, with XP Professional being the latest that supports all the software available today.

10. Some people prefer a touchpad mouse as the navigating option while others prefer the rubberised button situated between the keys G, H and B. Try working with both and pick the one you are most comfortable with.
Some laptops come equipped with both. You could also consider a cordless mouse, which is half the size of the regular one.

11. Insist on an inbuilt LAN card and modem.
There are basically two types of modems on offer -- internal modems and PC card-based modems. Make sure the internal modem is fast enough for your needs. Else, opt for the PC card-based one that sticks out of your computer, but is slightly better performance wise.

12. While budgeting for your laptop, bear in mind that a cheaper machine might prove expensive if you plan to upgrade it.
Do not compromise on the processor, the RAM and the operating system.
The memory capacity (GB) can be upgraded later on, so can the CD/DVD drives.

When you are buying your laptop check on upgradation. You can upgrade your machine with or without discarding it. If you plan to change your machine within two years, don't invest too heavily on it.

David Cameron says it is "decision time" for the Lib Dems over which party they will back to govern the UK.

The Tories won the most seats but were short of a majority and have asked for Lib Dem support to form a government.
But on Monday, the Lib Dems opened formal talks with Labour, after Gordon Brown said he would quit as leader.
Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg said talks had reached a "critical and final phase" and his party would "do our bit to create a stable, good government".
The Lib Dem negotiating team is now in talks with Labour in the House of Commons. A Conservative source said channels of communication remained open but they had no plans for further talks on Tuesday with the Lib Dems.
Mr Brown has also left Downing Street and gone to the Commons - Mr Cameron and Mr Clegg are already there although it is not known if any face-to-face talks are taking place.
Voting system
BBC political editor Nick Robinson said while many senior Lib Dems had close links to Labour, Mr Clegg would have to weigh up whether a deal with that party - which would still not have enough seats to command an overall majority - could deliver strong and stable government.

He said it would also depend on the extent of opposition to any deal within the Labour Party - with former cabinet ministers David Blunkett and John Reid already warning it could be very damaging for the party.
Both Labour and the Tories are trying to woo the Lib Dems with promises on electoral reform.
Labour say if the Lib Dems back them they will put the Alternative Vote system into law and then hold a referendum asking voters if they want a proportional representation voting system - a key issue for the Lib Dems.
But Mr Blunkett told the BBC any deal with Labour would be "a coalition of the defeated" and said the developments showed why full proportional representation was a bad idea.
"I think we can wear AV... What we can't have is this shambles every time we have an election. "
'Reasonable offer'
Under AV, voters rank candidates in a constituency. If no-one gets 50% of votes the candidate finishing last gets eliminated and their second preferences are awarded to the remaining candidates. This continues until one candidates passes the 50% mark.
The Conservatives upped their offer to the Lib Dems to a promise of a referendum on changing the voting system from existing first past the post system to AV.
Speaking on Tuesday morning Mr Cameron said his party had made a "very reasonable" offer to the Lib Dems and had put aside party interest in favour of the national interest - the Conservatives oppose changing the voting system.

But former Conservative cabinet minister Sir Malcolm Rifkind told the BBC he was "saddened, depressed and very angry" about what had happened. He said he had believed Mr Clegg was "acting in a very honourable way" before learning his team had been secretly meeting Labour.
Leaving his home on Tuesday morning, cabinet minister Ed Balls - one of the people widely expected to run for the Labour leadership - told reporters: "It's an important day. But we will take the time we need to take to make sure we get this right."
He said there were "areas of agreement" but also "some difficult issues" between the Labour and Lib Dem negotiation teams.
The BBC understands Labour strategists have drawn up a five-point plan to sell any deal to sceptics within their own party - including the argument that it would have legitimacy as between them the parties had 52% of the vote.
Meanwhile David Miliband refused to be drawn on the progress of talks between the Lib Dems and Labour - but appeared to confirm he would stand to succeed Mr Brown as Labour leader, saying: "I'm certainly not going to be saying anything more - and none of the candidates are going to be saying anything more."
Influential Labour backbencher Jon Cruddas put out a statement calling for the entire party and the trade unions to be consulted about any deal between Labour and the Lib Dems.
BBC News Channel chief political correspondent Laura Kuenssberg said it suggested he was considering himself as a candidate for the Labour leadership.
'Rainbow coalition'
Labour's ruling national executive committee is set to meet on Tuesday to discuss the prospect of a coalition and the time it will take to replace Mr Brown.
Senior Lib Dem and Labour figures have appeared to rule out a "rainbow coalition" involving the SNP and have said instead they could rule as a minority government, confident that the Scottish nationalists would not vote with the Conservatives.

Nick Clegg: Talks in critical and final phase

Labour's election co-ordinator Douglas Alexander told BBC Radio Scotland he "cannot envisage" the SNP being involved in any coalition agreement because there were "fundamental differences" between them.
The Tories secured 306 of the 649 constituencies contested on 6 May. It leaves the party short of the 326 MPs needed for an outright majority, with the Thirsk and Malton seat - where the election was postponed after the death of a candidate - still to vote.
Labour finished with 258 MPs, down 91, the Lib Dems 57, down five, and other parties 28.
If Labour and the Lib Dems joined forces, they would still not have an overall majority.
With the support of the Northern Irish SDLP, one Alliance MP, and nationalists from Scotland and Wales they would reach 328, rising to 338 if the DUP, the independent unionist and the new Green MP joined them.
